I’m a native, sure but I’ve never felt like I’m fully from here - not in the way that means you belong.

Maybe it’s the ill-fitting way I wear the accent: like a jacket, only when I need warmth in my environment.

Maybe it’s the “well” that I draw up any time someone else hears where I’m from, caveat-filled, so they don’t get the wrong idea.

Maybe it’s the discomfort I feel when someone garbs me in the peachy cotton trappings that have postcarded into their mind.

Or maybe it’s just the distance I constantly create between where I live and where I am.
